Executive Summary
The American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (AJTMH) is the flagship journal of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH). The Journal covers a wide range of scientific content, including original research papers, clinical case reports, reviews, editorials, perspectives, and more, all focusing on topics pertinent to global health and tropical medicine. As the journal’s Editor-in-Chief (EIC), you will be entrusted with maintaining the high standards and advancing the mission of the AJTMH. The EIC of the AJTMH serves as a member of the ASTMH Board of Directors and works closely with Journal staff, who implement the day-to-day publishing activities.
The main areas of responsibility for the EIC are:
1. Provide Editorial Direction and Vision: Lead the editorial direction and vision of the AJTMH in accordance with the scientific and educational mission of the ASTMH.
2. Manage the Peer Review Process: Oversee the peer review process by assigning manuscripts to subject-specific Section Editors and working with them to make final acceptance or rejection decisions. Serve as a Section Editor for topics within your expertise.
3. Ensure Integrity: Collaborate with the Managing Editor to address claims of scientific misconduct or conflict of interest promptly and in accordance with best practices in scientific publishing.
4. Provide Editorial Board Leadership: Lead the AJTMH Editorial Board, fostering engagement and encouraging participation from members.
5. Supervise the Editorial Office: Work with the Managing Editor and Publisher to oversee the editorial office staff and Section Editors to ensure efficient processing of manuscripts, adhering to industry standards and ethical guidelines.
6. Enhance Journal Breadth and Impact: Seek opportunities to increase the influence and reach of AJTMH, such as developing supplemental issues on specific topics in collaboration with third parties.
7. Manage Media Engagement: Collaborate with the Society's media professionals to identify articles of interest to the media and general public.
8. Contribute to Society Governance: Serve as a voting member of the ASTMH Board and Executive Committee, contributing to the continuity of knowledge across Society programs and initiatives.
Core Responsibilities of a Member of the ASTMH Board of Directors and Executive Committee
Actively participate in all Board of Directors and Executive Committee meetings.
Attend the Society’s Annual Meeting, serving as a representative of the Society’s leadership.
Work to build a diverse membership of the Society through individual as well as collective efforts.
Work in a timely, efficient and goal-oriented manner with fellow members of the Board, ASTMH committee members, and ASTMH staff.
Terms and Compensation:
- The EIC position has a three-year term, with a maximum of three terms.
- The term begins on the first day of the Society’s Annual Meeting in the year of appointment.
- An honorarium, set by the Board, is provided for this position.
Qualifications:
- Strong writing and editing skills.
- Expertise in multiple disciplines of tropical medicine, including both clinical and research aspects, international public health and global health.
- Familiarity with academic research and scholarly publishing.
- Consistent availability to enable rapid decision-making and to allow frequent communication with the Managing Editor and Publisher.
- Able to dedicate 10- 15 hours per week to Journal work.
